We didn't do much this weekend at the West Wing, other than watch the antics of our resident rufous hummingbird population. We have at least 3 boys and 2 girls. At this time of the year, the boys show off to the girls, and sit around guarding their food supply from other boys. And hence, the boys sit on the same branch they sat on last year, watching the same 3 feeders, and jealously fight off any other boy hummingbird that shows up -- girls, too, sometimes.
And lest you think that all those photos are of just one hummer, here's a photo of a rare moment: two boys sitting in a tree and not fighting. The one on the left with the red throat is obvious; the one on the extreme right edge of the shot is less so.
